POR VEZ PRIMERA

4×5 film photography series inspired by the poem “El Mar” by Jorge Luis Borges

As the great Argentine writer and poet Jorge Luis Borges wrote, referring to the sea:
“Whoever looks at it sees it for the first time, always.”
This inspiration gave rise to the series title, Por vez primera—“For the first time”—and from this feeling—the wonder of a first gaze—the work emerged.
I photographed the sea using a large format view camera, searching for a slow rhythm and an essential vision. Not to describe, but to listen.
Light—not only as revelation but as unveiling—may find, I believe, its most evocative space in the sea, a place of perpetual transformation where everything is present and absent at once.
Black and white helped me subtract and render color unnecessary, aiming to convey the sense of something that speaks without needing to be translated.
I tried to create photographs that are more thresholds than scenes, more evocations than descriptions.
These images do not intend to narrate, but to evoke. They are attempts to hold onto the impression of the purity of an encounter.
To look, once more, as if it were the first time
